Pain Avoidance & Meaning Model (PAMM)

The Pain Avoidance & Meaning Model (PAMM) was created to simplify pain science for clients/patients with persistent pain to encourage the use of clear and helpful language by health professionals in a variety of healthcare settings. It is now being used in private and public health settings in Australia, New Zealand and the United States to educate both clients/patients and health professionals about managing persistent pain conditions. Validation studies are currently in progress, and ongoing research is exploring various applications of the PAMM.

Desensitisation Exercise

The path to Restoration for a person who has become very sensitive to stimuli involves "desensitisation". Introducing the idea to clients that they should expose themselves to pain can feel counterintuitive and even threatening or frightening.
